A 24-year-old man from the Gorton area was arrested on suspicion of robbery and child abduction. He remains in police custody for questioning.
At around 7.40pm on Monday 16 May 2016 police were called to Aldi car park on Garrett Way, Gorton to reports of a man who had forced his way into a car.
The owner of the car, Tahir Mehmood, walked out of the supermarket to find out his wife and five-year-old son had been forced out of the car by the unknown offender.
Upon seeing Tahir, the offender began to drive away the car with his three-year-old son still in the back.
The car then collided with another car in the car park and the offender ran off in the direction of Gorton monastery, Gorton Lane.
On Wednesday (18 May 2016) police released CCTV footage appealing for the public’s help to identify the man who appeared in the footage.
Detective Sergeant Shagufta Khan of GMP’s North Manchester division, said: “We have made a positive step forward in the investigation but I would still urge anybody who has any information that would help us with the investigation, please get in touch.”
Anyone with information should contact police on 101 and quote incident number 2114 of 16/05/16 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
