Police Issue Warning Following Reports of Youths Throwing Stones at Moving Vehicles

Cleveland Police have received four reports of stone throwing at vehicles yesterday, Monday 20th June on the pedestrian footbridge whichs runs over the A19.

The incidents happened between 8:20pm and 9:20pm. A black Vauxhall Vectra, a green Fiat 500,  a white Vauxhall Corsa, and a HGV truck were all damaged as a result of the incidents but thankfully no one was injured.

As a result of the stone throwing, it is believed one of the objects thrown had flipped up and smashed into the window of a box van causing significant damage to the windscreen. Thankfully the driver was uninjured.

It is believed a group of youths are responsible for the incidents and officers have visited a nearby estate to speak with residents for them to advise youths on the dangers of stone throwing.

Chief Inspector Dave Sutherland said: “It is clear that these youths do not understand the exremely dangerous consesquences of their actions by throwing objects at moving vehicles and I am concerned to hear that these incidents are still happening.

“Thankfully so far, no one has been severely injured or killed but eventually this could happen if these incidents do not stop.

“Do these youths want death on  their conscience as a result of their irresponsible bevahiour? How would they feel if one of their friends or family members was injured or killed as a result of someone throwing a stones at their vehicles.

“I am certain they would be absolutely devastated and this shocking behaviour should not be encouraged.

“I would like the parents of these children involved to step up and play their part in educating  their children on the serious dangers of throwing objects at vehicles before someone dies.

“Anyone found to be carrying out such acts will face the full force of the law.”

Anyone with information regarding the youths or anyone who witnessed the incidents is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency 101 number, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
